Seeing one or two pesky ants in your Portland home may not be a cause for concern. Yet, ants are colony-based pests that typically don’t travel too far away from others. A qualified and experienced ant exterminator can help rid your home of ants once and for all.

How Does Ant Extermination Work?

There are many ways an exterminator can help remove ants from your home. Treatment options depend on the extent and location of your infestation. After all, ants are known to infest areas inside and outside of your home.

Full Colony Extermination Is Critical

To get rid of ants, you must exterminate the entire colony. To do that, there are a variety of treatment options available.

For example, we could place a potent ant bait to attract and kill ants around your home. This is great for smaller infestations that occur during the spring and summer months. We also provide spray treatments for heavier infestations as well as perimeter treatments to keep pests from entering your home.

Some of our treatments cause the ant to unknowingly take the substance back to the colony, resulting in spread. As the ants consume the treatment, they die. Most of the time, we combine treatment options to create an extermination plan that works for each specific case.

Types of Ants for Extermination

There are over 22,000 species of ants. In Portland, we typically see two different species: carpenter ants and odorous house ants. The good news is, both of these ant species can be exterminated.

  • Carpenter ants are often spotted near decaying wood or around the wood in your home.
  • Odorous house ants or sugar ants are often found near areas of high moisture such as kitchens and bathrooms.

Carpenter ants are larger than odorous ants, which are only ⅛” long. Odorous ants are dark brown or black, and when squashed, give off an acidic smell. While carpenter ants are also brown or black in color, they can range from 3.4 mm to 13 mm in length.
